Sometimes it helps to talk to someone who has been there and knows what you are going through.
Support during holidays
Cancer Connect referrals can continue to be made over the Holiday period. Requests received after midday Tuesday December 24, 2024, will be actioned from Thursday, January 2, 2025. Waiting times for assistance before and after the Holiday period will be dependent on the availability of employees and volunteers.
Cancer Connect
Cancer Connect aims to connect you, your carer or your loved ones over the phone with a trained volunteer who has had a similar experience. Where a match is not available, this service will direct you to other support services.
Our support volunteers are trained and can help you with:
- Support before, during, or after treatment and during recovery.
- Practical information gained through personal experience.
- Hope, encouragement and a positive role model for recovery.
- Ideas about where to find more information.
We have volunteers available to support people with a wide variety of cancer types and cancer related challenges. Volunteers do not give medical advice or provide professional counselling.
Cancer Connect is exclusively a telephone-based peer support program where volunteers provide up to six calls at mutually agreeable times for clients and carers.
The service is accessible by calling Cancer Council 13 11 20, Monday to Friday 9am-5pm (excluding public holidays).
Eligibility
Queenslanders affected by cancer aged over 18 who would like to use one-on-one telephone-based peer support. Peer support is provided by a volunteer who has had a similar experience.
If you have advanced cancer, or a high level of distress, we will refer you to one of our other programs or services as appropriate.
You can request re-screening for the program once you are no longer experiencing a high level of distress.
Volunteering
We are always looking for willing volunteers to join Cancer Connect. If you are looking for an opportunity to share your experiences to provide support to others, please contact Cancer Council Queensland or view our volunteer page.
